Docketing Specialist - Thomson Reuters

The Docketing Specialist is responsible for the QA of processed Ad Hoc Patent Payment requests, including all critical data elements for payment. This position requires quick identification of Ad Hoc priority based on tax due dates and appropriate distribution of requests. A sense of urgency, accuracy and attention to detail are critical to success in this position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Use and apply patent knowledge on a daily basis, staying abreast of IP Rules changes
  2. Maintain a high level of proficiency in the use of the Company’s proprietary internal payment system
  3. Review Ad Hoc Payments for time sensitive issues
  4. Identify urgent Ad Hoc Payment requests based on tax due dates
  5. Identify critical data requirements and perform patent data integrity checks on client requested ad hoc patent payments
  6. Ensure docketing was performed completely and accurately for all Ad Hoc Payment requests within 24 hours
  7. Generate and proof for quality all routine and special docket reports as necessary
  8. Proof the electronic Ad Hoc Payment record against the hard copy Ad Hoc Payment request
  9. Investigate data integrity issues and take appropriate actions
  10. Maintain the accuracy and integrity of day-to-day docketing and maintenance of patent records
  11. Contribute to the processing of bulk patent payments, including client correspondence, updating of patent records, verification of client’s patent data and reviewing data integrity reports
  12. Schedule work to meet department deadlines and perform job responsibilities under pressure efficiently, productively and in a professional manner
  13. Train backup(s) on all job duties

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Paralegal degree and/or Bachelors degree required
  • Minimum of five years of patent docketing experience or equivalent required
  • Working knowledge of docketing software
  • Knowledge and understanding of the maintenance and monitoring phase of the Intellectual Property lifecycle
  • Demonstrated ability in accuracy, proofreading, and attention to detail
  • Prioritizes, manages time and orchestrates multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Interacts and works well with others in various fast changing environments and situations
  • Successfully works both independently and in a team environment
  • Maintain a high sense of urgency and the ability to meet several critical deadlines throughout the day

  • Prepare and prosecute patent and trademark applications.
  • Assign patent preparation and prosecution matters to a group of outside counsel and supervising their work product to assure it meets Masco’s standards of quality, timeliness and cost.
  • Actively participate in Masco’s invention disclosure review process to help assure that Masco’s best inventions are identified and patented.
  • Manage the docket and workflow for US and foreign patent and trademark portfolios.
  • Conduct computer based intellectual property investigations and research.
  • Render opinions on patentability, freedom to operate (patent and trademark clearances), and intellectual property enforcement and infringement matters.
  • Negotiate and draft intellectual property agreements.
  • Participate as a member of a cross functional team to provide support in licensing, litigation, or other matters.
  • Counsel business unit managers with respect to IP matters and strategy.

Responsibilities & Qualifications:

  • The candidate for this position must be a graduate of an accredited law school, registered to practice before the USPTO, and admitted to at least one State Bar.
  • BS in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering a plus.
  • Minimum of 4 years of legal experience required, preferably with a medium to large firm and with a strong patent preparation/prosecution background.
  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Ability to work with clients in a team-oriented, partnership to help them arrive at business solutions to their problems.
  • Flexibility to accept new and different challenges in a fast paced, high tech environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • A positive attitude.
